I wanted to take a picture of me putting my reverb box on top of a snare drum and post it. Damn if I didn't just get rid of my kit since I wasn't using it anymore!
A gated reverb on an Aux bus would work great. I like a plate reverb - very dense and short for more modern stuff. If you want to sound like Def Leppard, a longer gated snare works great though!
gating just the reverb channel is a good idea anyway as it gets rid of any hi hat blead and cleans the reverb channel nicely. You dont have to go extreme 80's style whenever you gate.
Also, try playing around with the pre delay if your reverb plugin/hardware has that feature, its a cool thing to play around with during mixing.

Didn't they chain it like this in the 80's?
EQ--->Reverb--->Compress the whole works so the snare hit lasted an hour--->Gate to shut it down?
Not really......
post aux send from snare channel to
EMT or 224X or DN780 or PCM70 or Rev 1 or Rev 5 or even an SPX 90
Alive on the DN780 was the coolest gated verb
return to stereo bus.

Could there be any tips? You mean a la 80's gated reverb I suppose? Just pick a send, add a reverb that you like. Mix to taste.

And are they still doing things in that order, just in a more subtle way, or am I way off on that one?

Gate and verb. 200 Hz to 6 KHz? Make sure the reverb doesn't start really late. I always use reverb on the snare, if even just a tad.
