Hello, I'm still confused on the idea of the whole set up of all the setups out there. mixer, preamp, amp, interface, monitor... phew! going crazy! ;)
I'm wondering if someone can explain all these in a graphical form (if it isn't there already)? (i know, i know, you might not be an artist but if you can just draw boxes and lines like a circuit would be greatly appreciate.) What is the ideal setup (less noise...)?

To lay out all the possibilities graphically would take forever. There are so many different things to use and many different ways to use them that covering it all ain't easy.
But lets assume you are interested in a computer recording setup. If that's the case, you can assume that most of the audio handling/processing will be done on the computer. Then all you need to worry about is getting the audio into and out from the computer.
Since you wanted a picture, here ya go. Please note, this is a VERY simple diagram and there are literally thousand of ways this can be done. But no matter what is stuck in the middle, this is the basics of it.
BTW....the AD/DA converter, shown twice in the diagram is usually just one device that handles both the input and output.

go into what you're wanting to do. my set up is my 002r that runs pro tools le thats pluged into my computer with a firewire cable. the 002r has 4 mic preamps built in which allows you to record four tracks at one time. so your mic goes into the 002r which goes into my firewire port on my computer. simple. that is a mixerless setup. i'll let someone else explain a mixer set up and some of the more complicated setups.
