I love the sound that Layne Staley got on 'Dirt'. How, besides reverb or delay, is he getting that 'bigger than life' vocal sound?

i have also heard this technique used on ozzy's voice and on Anthrax's "Black Lodge" just to help pinpoint the sound i mean.
