Just interested to know how yours works.
I have a Hercules Prophet With RADEN 7500 chipset (i think). It has 1 VGA monitor slot and a DVI-I one (which i have a VGA converter on) = 2 VGA 17" monitors. My 1st monitor is at 1152 x 864 and the 2nd 1024x768. The 2nd monitor however has always been a little fuzzier/hazier than the 1st. The software i had bundled was Hydra Vision.
It annoys the hell out of me that i cant get the start bar to run all the way across the two screens.

The ATI and Matrox are designed for different purposes. The Radeon's are built for gaming specifically, the dual outs are just a bonus but the focus is on gaming performance. The Matrox is purpose built for multiple displays so the focus is on that. These two approaches lead to some compromises. Karl is correct the drivers are an issue, but only to the extent that they are written to make the hardware perform at it's best. If your looking to have your desktop look the way you want go with the Matrox, if you want high framerates and detailed textures go with the ATI.

The details related to dual monitor operation are driver related. I have a Matrox G450 and also run different resolutions on my monitors. I am quite certain that if I changed them to the same resultion that I could have it act as one large screen with a long taskbar and apps would maximize to fill both monitors.
That isn't what I want, so I don't go there. I had a dual head nVidia card, and a dual head ATI card installed for a short time - the matrox dual head drivers are, IMHO, a more sensible implimentation than the others. I don't think anyone is going to let you get a long taskbar with different resolutions on the two monitors.
