You can daisy chain them and simply set them to different MIDI channels (for instance, have the keys on Channel 1 and the VL to Channel 2, etc.)

The VL70-m manual has a section on setting the MIDI channels; look in the index (mine's across the house at the moment....)

I also have a WX-5 setup but have only recorded it using audio.... post back and let me know how recording the MIDI works out for you!

Definitely possible.

Buy a MIDI interface with two inputs (like a M-Audio MIDISport 2x2 or similar) Hook the WX5 MIDI output to one input and the keybaord to the other. Set them to operate on different MIDI channels.

Attach the VL-70m to one MIDI output. and you can put another synth on the other MIDI out if you like. Or you could do the daisychaining as suggested, but I'd recomment against it, because it may mess with the timing of the MIDI devices.

Configure Logic (the hard part) to recognize, and work with this setup. I could give you some help if you need it. After that's done, you'll have to do some trickery to get the two MIDI signal flows to go to different destinations.

Create a transformer in the environment. Click the checkbox next to the Icon setting in the Parameters box. Cable the top output to the VL-70m Instrument. Cable the second output to the second synth that your partner will be playing. Set the transformer to send MIDI messages on Channel X (WX5 MIDI channel) to the top output, and Channel Y (keyboard MIDI channel) or all other channels to the second output. I can walk you through it, if you'd like.

Create a track in the Arrange page and assign the Transformer object to it. Select Auto demix by MIDI channel (or whatever its called) in the Options>Song Settings menu.

Press record!!!

Once you've recorded the parts, you can do some cleaning up, by, for instance, creating dedicated tracks in the Arrange for the VL-70m and the other synth and moving the MIDI to those tracks.

Replace the transformer with a channel splitter, much simpler. And you can, theoretically, play and record 16 MIDI instruments simultaneously!!!

so I do not need the midi 2x2 you mentioned? I have already ordered one (I'll find a use for it I'm sure).

But I am totally in favor on the simplist solution.

Sorry, I've been away a few days. You do need the 2x2 MIDI interface.

the channel splitter i mentioned is a software object within Logic's environment. You use it to split the MIDI signals up once they get into Logic. You still need the 2x2 interface to get the signals into Logic!

I'm dying to try it.

I have had trouble getting my SI 24 Studio Package Pro to function.

The software is communicating with it, but I can't control the software from the mixing console.

I have ordered another one so I can be sure the problem is not a hardware one.

Seems to be par for the course.

The SI 24 Studio Package Pro is a bundle of the SI 24 Mixing console, RPC 1/Logic interface.

I should be able to control the software from the mixing console.

The software controls the mixing faders etc. with a MIDI signal (I believe).

I can't get the SI 24 to funtion and control the software. I have worked with a guy named Bryan H. at Roland and we have done all the things that usually are a problem.

I am going to swap a new SI24 and see if it functions properly. If not, I will set up an entire new Studio Package Pro and see if that works. if not I guess it must be my computer somehow.

I have heard of other users having problems with the SI-24. But if you're working with a Roland employee and you can't get it working, I'd suggest you spend your money elsewhere!

Thinking of DigiDesign 002 system. I want the easiest/best system I can afford so I can get to my music.

What are your thoughts?

Digi002 is a good option. Albeit expensive. The Roland SI24 is at a price point that no other similar setup can approach, pricewise.

You can use the Digi002 with Logic, but in that scenario, Logic is a separate purchase. Or you can just use PTLE, which comes with the Digi002. But, from what I understand, PTLE is limited in its MIDI functionality and I don't know if you'll be able to do the two simultaneous inputs thing. Maybe someone else could supply that info.

The Logic Control (or Mackie Control - same thing, $899) is by far the best mixing desk-styled controller to use with Logic. But it doesn't have any audio capabilities, so you would need to buy a separate audio interface. I'm also hearing good things about the new Yamaha 01x, and its $700 cheaper than the Digi002, with the same basic functionality.
