My Dell laptop has only 1 firewire connection, and I need both a soundcard and an external hard drive. Which is better:

1) Firebox on my firewire connection, external hard drive on a USB port?

2) External hard drive on my firewire connection, Mbox on my USB port?

I'm new to recording and am trying to head off issues down the road, so any and all opinions would be welcome. Thanks.

Don't forget about the RME PC card for Laptops (used with the Multiface and Digiface boxes).

Also, lots of Firewire interfaces have a secondary FW port for "daisy chaining" FW devices. I recently saw a thread discussing issues with Audio FW devices trying to share the FW bus with other perhiferals, so you may want to check up on that, too...

FW is generally more stable and a "Professional" interface. USB is more for non-critical or lower bandwidth perhiferals.
