I know that I haven't posted here in a very long time (wow, probably since the Opus days), but I've been a regular lurker.
Here's my dilemmna - I've been using two harddrives on my Intel 2ghz DAW running Win2Kpro for a long time. I've been using an unknown brand 10gig that I pulled from my old emachines CPU for the OS and programs and an 80gig Seagate 7200rpm 2mg cache for my files. I purchased a Western Digital 160gig 7200rpm 8mg cache with the intentions of making the 80gig my OS drive and the 160gig my file drive. Does it make sense to use the 160gig for the operating system instead because of the larger cache? I guess that I could partition it and use the extra space for backups, etc.
I plan on installing this tonight so if anyone has any ideas I would really be greatly appreciative.

Well, after I posted this here I placed a similar post over at my music forum and received this response from one of the highly respected regulars:
"1. With enough memory in a PC, and read/write of audio data on a different hard drive, the windows page file should be barely used, so once an app is running, the only reason it needs to be accessed is to load the program and DLL's, which should be fast, even on a slow drive. If the pagefile is used a lot, then the faster drive will help overall performance.
2. To get advantage from having an 'audio drive' make sure it is on a different controller to the operating system. That means (if using EIDE drives) putting the audio drive as a master on (for example) the secondary channel, and having the O/S as the master on the Primary channel. Do not put them both on the same channel, as master and slave.
Having the faster drive for the O/S will not hurt, but is unlikely to make much difference once an app is running, unless you do run out of memory and windows needs to use the cache (pagefile).
