I consider myself fairly new to recording even though I have released several successful mixtape projects with my hip hop label. I am running digi 002 still on 7.1, Wavesplatinum, ssl 4000 plugs. My mic preamp is the Universal Audio LA-610 my mic is an AKG C414. I'm not sure this is the best set up for Hip Hop however its what I have and before I can make that decision I'm not sure I am using all of these units correctly.
My first question is using the preamp I have recorded vocals w a little compression going in as well as some bypassing the compressor all together. Either way its seems that I cant get a consistent sound when I record. I can sound wonderful one take and go back in booth the next take and those settings are completely wrong to get the same sound.
So with the set up I've listed above are there any standard approaches I need to take when recording vocals and avoiding them sounding so thin at times?
I read a lot about the La-610 is a good unit. Any users who have suggestions on how to get the best out it with the AKG please help!

You have to remember that what you are comparing your efforts to is multiple takes layered together. You record a verse, and say, "Man, this sounds thin." Well, that song you are comparing it to may have four takes mixed together, probably more.
This is besides what's going on with your equipment.
