Fletcher, maybe you can shed some light on this for me. I'd like to know what the differences may be between the telefunken elam 251 and the lawson and sounddelux "replicas" I'm not looking for a "which one sounds better" comparison but what might some of the electrical or mechanical differences be. are these new ones exact copies ? are they improved ? ya know, what gives?

I haven't seen nor heard the Lawson, so I'm afraid I can't comment on that one. The Soundelux is pretty damn close .

Sonicly, when I compared it to my old ELA M 251 E, it came pretty close. The Soundelux had a little more "sparkle" on the way top, the original had a "creamier" upper midrange.

Both sat in the track beautifully, though the original was a tad sweeter, the Soundelux took a tad less EQ and compression to get it breathy.

Other than that...I'm not really all that up on the mechanics of this stuff...I've seen them, but am not really intimately familiar with the way they work (sound-yes, work-no).

Hope this helps.
