just wondering. . has anyone ever tried recording to a vcr or beta max then sending it to the daw for editing. what kind of sound did it produce?

I had a Sony PCMF1 that I purchased in 1983 and they recommended a Betamax to record to because you can switch off the colored dropout compensator and cause less errors. I didn't have a Betamax, I had a Hitachi, VHS portable, worked just as good.
I have made numerous recordings that included video and ended up on VHS hi-fi tracks (without AGC) which weren't too bad even though you could hear the head switching at very low levels.
Automatic gain control or AGC is awful sounding. The worst compression you could possibly think of! What are you trying to accomplish? I hope this is not to try and just get an analog sound??

in the days before DAW & CD burners being as cheap as they are, I used to mix to SVHS, but the only reasons were it had better headroom than cassette, and I could use timecode to sync with video guys.(vast majority of what I did back then was Live recording and I could take it home and watch movies! - if I was doing something important though, I rented a Dat machine.
Wasn't really a sonic decision, just a $$ one.

oh absolutely not, just thought it would be a cool new way to experiment. i have problems with trying new things too much. i once silly putty'ed a plate mic ( i think thats what it's called, it was a cheap one) on the wall and put my bass cab against the wall to see what kind of sound drywall makes..... im an idiot.
