The CD writer in my iBook (system 9.1) doesn't write as fast as it
used to. It used to write at 8Xs now I can't even do 4Xs. Has anyone
had this problem? I'm tending to think it is hardware because it has
gradually gotten worse. I'm using jam 2.6.2. Even after I restart and
open only Jam and try to burn from a disc image, I can't write at
4Xs. It skips. The newly burned CD will skip from track 4 or 5 to the
end.

Need more info, cpu, ram, HD size.

If your ram is not maxed out, or if the memory for the app is set to it's minimun. The app will use space on your hardrive to cache the files before buring them.

If you have a second hard drive for audio, set the preferences in Jam/Toast to use that drive.

Also if you only have one drive, as the drive gets filled, new files are written to the first available space.
If your drive is fragmented the large cache file will be written to several different locations. It takes a hard drive more time to locate and read the data.

Highlight Jam/Toast , get info/memory , give the apps more memory if you've got it.
