My father for years has loved to sing and record himself with just his cellphone. I am planning to finally do a little setup for him but I am totally new to this. I believe he has a good speaker the harbinger MLS900 and got a Samson C01 condenser mic with a cheap 48V phantom power supply. Is it a must to have a computer ? Can he just connect the mic to the phantom power then to the speaker and just record ?

Hi, and welcome!

You can indeed connect the microphone through your PP supply directly to the Harbinger speaker, but you can't record like that. However, I think you meant connecting it to the phone. If that's the case, there are adaptor devices available that would allow him to do that in the same way the Harbinger PA does, i.e. via Bluetooth. An example adaptor is the Alto.

Kurt's suggestion of an XLR-equipped portable recorder is an alternative. There are many portable recorders into which you can plug a professional microphone, and they can even supply the phantom power, albeit with a reduced battery life. One of the recorder models I have is the Zoom H4N, which, although about 10 years old now, is readily available second-hand.
