Hi all...

I'd like to introduce a new member to our forum, Eddie1261.

Ed and I have been friends for a long time, going back to the early 80's. We've shared both stages and studios together over the years, and I suggested he join this forum because he is recording his own project right now and I thought he might benefit from the vast amount of knowledge here in these halls.

So, say hello when you get a chance, and don't beat up on him until he's acclimated to our surroundings, at which point you may abuse at will. ;)

Hi Ed! I'm looking forward to reading/ hearing how your project is going and sharing anything I can to help that happen for you. The 80's eh. Well, you got me right away on that decade. Those were the crossroads years , the transformation of so much in this business, the pinnacle years. :love:

What I write isn't really always what I mean so lets get that cleared up right away too. I keep Donny close by my side. He seems to be the closest link to literal and musical sanity for me. We bounce our thoughts back and forth like brothers.

Hello to everyone and thanks for the virtual open armed welcome!

Donny and I have done out share of work over the years but we also had our shares of laughs. Unfortunately, most of the stories can't be repeated in public, so....

I WILL share one communal laugh from a time that we were on the road in Canada. We were playing some Bryan Adams tune, and it will take a minute to think of it because every one of his songs sounded the same..... it was Summer of 69. In the middle of a song is a break, and we did that break on a synth. We got to that spot in the song, and given the mind numbing nature of playing that sorry tune every night, 6 nights a week for 12 weeks, my brain was totally asleep and I was playing on cruise control, likely thinking about which video game I was going to play first when I got back to the rooms. So comes that spot where I was supposed to solo and I just stopped playing like everybody else did. 5 sets of eyes turned to me, immediately and all at the same time. By that point it didn't matter anyway, so I just stood there and looked back for about 5 seconds (5 seconds of dead air on stage is like what, a week and a half?) and finally I stepped up to the mic and said "Why did everybody stop playing?" We were all laughing so hard we didn't even bother finishing or homage to Mr Adams and moved on to the next song on the list.

And there's your first window into my sardonic sense of humor....

But on a serious note, I am glad to be here with all of the industry pros and expect to learn a great deal.

If Donny and I can just get through this album....

LOL... You really did like Ensoniq, didn't ya? It figures you would choose to collect multiple models from a synth company that is no longer in business. What did Roland or Korg ever do to you, anyway?
Or do you like investing in companies with a limited future? If so, I have some stock I'd like to sell you... it's the coming thing - Beta Tape!

Joking of course. I had a VFX - back when Eisenhower was President - that I really liked the brass sounds on. And, I still have a KS32 knocking around here somewhere - which is completely useless, cuz it needs a new battery - and of course it's one that I can't find anymore.

I love anyone that knows Ensoniqs are awesome. I finally had to say good bye to my TS-12 in 2012. My wife told me if I wanted my new Yamaha Motif XF-8 I had to sell the others.. so, I sold my TS-12. It was bought new in 1995 and other than some new keys (some got broken in a move, even in a road case), it worked perfectly all those years, no screen issues, replaced the battery once in 2001. I still miss it, even with the awesome Yamaha. Guita center bought it for $500.00 and were amazed I had literally everything that came with it. Viva Ensoniq!!.

Hey Eddie, nice to meet ya. I know D from this site, he's a really solid dude, he has a knack for saying the right thing.
Looks like ha got quite the collection there! In my mind I've run them thru a vibrolux cranked and mic'd the hallway behind you. It sounds good :)

Is it a solo project you are working on?

Kmetal, yes, this is a solo project. I finally decided that I needed to do an album of my own stuff, if for no other reason to check it off the bucket list. (Just a little tip for you all, when you make your bucket list, make the first item "Make a bucket list". Then as you make the list, you can check one item off immediately.) Donny has thus far made 7 of 11 songs sound like I know what I'm doing. I'll post the Kickstarter here when the time comes in hopes that some of you may want to buy a copy. Otherwise, that initial run of 100 will last me forever. Even after all my friends buy them, I don't know what I'll do with the other 96 copies.

Some of those Ensoniq boards were Craigslist finds, one was in a pawn shop... One, the ESQ-1, I still have from the 80s. The SQ1 needed a battery, which I found online for 30 bucks, one needed an OS upgrade, again online for 35 bucks.... a couple needed things done but there's a shop in PA that still works on them. The power supply went out on the sampler and the guy in that shop in PA sold me a part and sent me photos on how to replace it. The worst part on those keyboards were that the power supply was internal and all that heat eventually became a problem. The board with the external power bricks seem to last longer. I am actually currently looking to sell 3 of them that I haven't played in a year. With my Nord Electro 4 I have a lot of much better sounds available. The 4 I use are the Nord, the ESQ-1, the EPS 16+ sampler and the VFX (now that I had the soldering issue on the keyboard ribbon cable fixes). The other 3 can go. The hard part is trying to find a buyer for 25 year old boards.

Makzmia, should your wife change her mind, the TS-10 is up for grabs.... :-)

LOL!!! That was at a time when I had electrical problems in that wall and had to take some drywall out to find it. Whoever converted that attic into bedrooms actually left a piece of Romex running FROM the outlet, with tape wrapped around the ends and taped to a stud. LIVE!! That hole has since become a plexiglass window, in line with one in the wall on the other side of the stairwell that splits the 2nd floor in half. There are drums in the other room. That allows me to close a drummer off with 2 doors, with a monitor in front of him or wireless monitors if he prefers, and a snake running through the wall to record the drums. The windows allow me to have eye contact with the drummer. After all that, putting in windows, running a snake, buying a drum kit, mics for the drums, treating the room some to kill the echos..... I have had a drummer in here exactly once.

I have a lot of home built stuff up there, like a semi circular foam lined enclosure for singing, some of the old desks I built until I bought a nice workstation... I did a bunch of stuff for sound that isn't proper from the physics point of view (hanging old quilts I bought from Goodwill and such), but I don't do that much mic level recording, mostly line level.

I would really love to have the funds to tear ALL that drywall out, have the roof sprayed with foam insulation, and then have drywall put on without the kneewall, just floor to ceiling. The room was an attic that the previous home owner converted to 2 bedrooms, so there were closets and built in dressers and stuff up there. And they added a bathroom and did a TERRIBLE job on it. The ultimate reno would be to take the pitch roof off and put a slanted roof on. That would get me more standing room up there. But first I have to decide if I want to stay in Ohio or move south to a warmer place. North Carolina calls out to me every year in winter. 63 of these Ohio winters is enough.
