Hi,

Does anyone have any good resources for an in-depth study of mic preamp-amps? I want to know about all the different types, manufacturers, models, history, etc.

What's the best way to go about buying a high end model? How did you make your pre-amp decisions? Listening to records? Talking to friends? Can I try before I buy?

Basically, I'm ready to step up to something nice that will be a part of my studio for a long time, but the choices are a bit overwhelming. I'd rather not ask the "what's the best pre-amp?" question. So. I want to become a pre-amp expert. Point me in the right direction :)

thanks!

Pick a few makes/models and use the search function here and google would be a good start. Look at the gear list of any world class studio and you will quickly learn what is more used than others. It is still likely to take several years to become any kind of expert as there is much more to preamps that what you learn by only reading.
