I was using Cakewalk, with an AArdvark pro interface several years ago before my computer crashed. I have now aquired a Sony vaio laptop and am wishing to utilize the gear I have with the newer laptop. My issue is the interface only has a parrelel port connection and the laptop only has the standard usb ports. Can I just use an adapter cable to make this conversion? or do I need to completely update my inteface and software?

I thought people from Kansas were also living in the 21st century? No? You're talking about a 15+ year old interface. You didn't have a Sony laptop when you got that interface and you shouldn't have that interface with a Sony laptop. Make sense? I hope so? Otherwise you can certainly purchase a brand-new desktop computer with a parallel port on it. No? Then maybe you might want to look into something that was built sometime in the new millennia? Something like the PreSonus Audio Box USB 1.1 version for little more than $160 and the USB 2.0 version for about $250. And it includes an awesome software package that you might take a liking to?

Antique instruments as opposed to antique technologies hold their value better.

You could make the physical connection through a USB to parallel port converter, as Jack suggests. However, the problems will come in getting the Aardvark software drivers firstly to run under the newer operating system and then to recognize the interface through the disguise of USB.

Rather than throw money at the Aardvark, I would put it towards a newer USB interface. Give us a few details about how many and type of channels you need (in and out) and also a budget and we can make some suggestions.
