I'm looking at buying a recording software package. I'm running Win2k and have seen a few programs like Cubase that only runs on XP. Why? What is the difference for audio s/w?
Currently I'm getting a MOTU 828mkII and deciding on software. I will be getting a second MOTU a little later. I want to be able to record 16 tracks simultaineouslyfrom my mixer. Maybe either Audio Audition, its seem less expensive than a lot of others, or Cubase SX which I can get at a decent price, but have not been able to try it out without changing my OS. Any thoughts about these software packages?

There is some limitation in Win2k that has been eliminated in WinXP.
Adobe Audition (I assume you are referring to this) and Steinberg Cubase are actually different types of music programs.
Audition is a glorified waveform editor, and Cubase is a glorified midi sequencer.
While either of these programs try to offer a limited set of features that the other excels at , neither would actually be a replacement for the other in the truest sense of the word.
If you create a lot of midi files, then Cubase is the obvious choice...if you will be doing mostly mic or live performance stuff, then Adobe Audition would probably do you well.
