Hey folks i just bought the Focusrite ISA 428 about a month ago and the damn thing doesnt seem to work properly.

Ive tried different mics, cords, configurations and what I'm getting is a clipped signal half way up the meter(-8). It almost sounds like it is being overly compressed. This seems to be most problematic in the low end,but the general description is static, and muffled.

Hey, I don't really post much, but I've been floating around for a while..

Anyway, I play in a reggae influenced band outta buffalo, NY. I've been doing the band's latest recordings in our home studio, (Mackie Board, MOTU A/D Converter, Soundcraft Compact 4, various mics, etc. )

Focusrite ISA 428 or the JML TMP8 preamp?

hey everyone,

I am in the market for a new higher end preamp (currently only Twin Track Pro and the Tascam FW-1884 on board pres).

I am looking at the ISA 428, and recently because of all the great feedback, the JML TMP8.

I like the 428 because of the A/D card I can get along w/ 4 great pres..giving me 8 extra inputs in addition to my current 8.

well, I have heard really good things on both of these units and have never heard anyone compare them to each other. They are both 4 channel mic preamps, the 428 being solid state with the optional 8 channel ADAT out ($1699, $599 for optional ADAT a/d), and the VMP-4000e is tube with just analog outs ($1899). I know they have different "colors of sound", but is one better quality?

Kurt,

Great review on the VMP 4000e. with a US price of $1497.00 for a quad pre..

Also to all:
take note that Sebatron is offering a 2 channel version called the VMP 2000e and it's going for $850.00 USD . an equally unbelievable price for a 2 channel/stereo tube pre.

great job Kurt
