I need a portable recording device for some light foley work where I would need to be outdoors or mobile. Sounds include banging and slamming sounds that would be dangerous to record indoors, ambient sounds like nature, rain, or speech in a social setting, and the sound of wind rushing.

I was wondering if using a Yamaha 01V96 as a DAW recording device was a good idea?
If I would like to record 12 simultaneous channels via firewire into software (like cubase, or such), can the 01V96 be used as such?
Several years ago, I purchased an Aardvark Q10 for all my recording needs. I used this in conjunction with Cool Edit Pro / Adobe Audition until recently, and I have been very happy with the results. A few weeks ago, however, I bought a new computer, which came with Windows Vista, and my Aardvark will not function/install properly.
I am new to sound recording and wanted a portable device to record family gatherings (storytelling), friends playing musical instruments and singing, children talking and various environments while travelling.
