I have a 1995 Mackie 24.8  8 bus mixer, I'm tired of my DA88 tapes being chewed up and paying Tascam over $300 for repair, so can anyone recommend a 24 track hard disc recorder that will interact with the old Mackie board and hookup to it?  Someone mentioned the Alesis hd24 BUT a mix review on that said" the HD24 does not allow multiple track takes"  what does that really mean?

There's an article in the latest issue of Audio Media magazine about the making of U2's latest record "How to dismantle an atomic bomb". Turns out that one of the tracks is mixed on a Mackie 8-bus console and that all of Bonos vocals are recorded with a handheld SM58.

May sound like a silly question, but I've used both these boards but not together so it's hard to judge. Obviously the eq was far superior on the Ghost. But just sound quality in the line inputs (I won't use either preamps) minus eq does the Ghost sound better? Why does it? It's easy to say just because one is a Mackie and the other is a Soundcraft but why is it better?

I've never tried one but it appears that a lot of people don't like the Mackie 8 bus yet I see them in numerous mid level professional studio's. Not intending to be used in tracking only monitoring and mixing would this be that bad of a way to go?

Who is using the D8B and what do you think of it so far? What are you recording to? Any tips on setting it up? How many MFX and UFX cards do you really need? Is the automation smooth enough to use? Any software limitations or bugs that cause headaches?

I've talked to dealers and reps and Mackie guys directly, but I want to know what the people who have them think. Thanks.
