Today I wanted to try reducing latency by increasing the sample rate to 48khz. I recently got a new MOTU 8pre interface. It has been working in spite of having to reconfigure the Optical In and Out everytime I startup. I have no ADATS or anything optical between the 8pre and the USB port on the back of my iMac.

For the past year or so, I’ve been using two MOTU 8pres – one is a firewire interface, the other a USB. The USB (MOTU #2) is connected via optical cable to the firewire (MOTU #1).

I read on the MOTU site that I can chain 2 8pre's together to get 16 channels of recording by using the optical connections. Has anyone done something similar to this and can offer some insight as to how easy/difficult it is? I am not finding anything very descriptive on "how" to do it, and would like to order the right cables/etc the first time around.

I've had a MOTU 8pre for almost 2 years. It worked great for quite a while.
This fall it began to disrupt my whole computer. I run XP Professional on an Intel board, Intel Quad Core processor, 8 gigs of ram. Freeze-ups of any type of program that uses audio. My DAW is Cubase SX3.
I recently purchased a MOTU 8pre to expand the number of microphone preamps on my 828 MKII so my band can record a demo with a full drumset. I'm running Cubase SX3, and I can't figure out how to set it up so that I have 10 different inputs (8 from the 8pre, plus the 2 on the MKII) recording at once in Cubase.
I was trying to connect these two units together, M-audio being a main interface connected to PC through firewire. I connected MOTU 8-pre out into M-audio IN with optical cable. Pro Tools were running and froze right away. So I restarted computer, and can't seem to find any sign of MOTU connected on the PC. Pro Tools say that paths for inputs 5 - 32 are not found.
Sorry for my noobishness, but I really have no idea what the hell ADAT is, and my MOTU 8pre has it/uses it. Normally I wouldn't care because I just use the 8Pre as a straight-up audio interface/preamp for mics when recording.
