The invention of digital audio recordings liberated sound engineers in many ways which were not possible in the analog era. Even with all the tools at one’s fingertips, musicians and engineers sorely missed the sound and sonics of earlier recordings. The magic that the recording mediums imparted by default and one which was taken for granted.

preamp recommendations for saturation

Could anybody recommend a good preamp (tube or solid state) that would give me the capability to get nice saturation/distortion. I've got the bluetube, but the tube seems to have died. Turning up the tube drive doesn't affect the signal. I'm into a lot of 50s, 60s, 70s stuff. Want something that would give me some nice, warm distortion, if I want it.

Vocal Saturation/Distortion

I'm sure there are several methods to the same end in this case, but I was wondering how the vocals are tracked/processed to get the sound you hear from groups like Rancid, Arctic Monkeys, The Hives, etc. I know that most of these recordings are already limited to the max, but the vocals have a certain "old tape" quality.

saturation plugins, what are you using?

Anyone listened to the vocals on "five for fighting". Of course this is where the stiff ol purists are going to go off about voice, mic, pre, bla bla bla ... But there's more in that vocal sound, it's lo mids are saturated to bursting. You can hear the difference on a few of the tracks that have no saturation.
