In my audio engineering class my professor has done mic tests with different mics on the same sound source. This gave us a great understanding of what mics do what and sound better for various desired results. I understand everything goes by preference, but how should I really know which mic is best for myself without really hearing it compared to others of the same style?

How do you sound test different mics without buying them

I hear terms like oscillator, test tone, sine waves, pink or white waves. I know that they are gotta have tools and knowledge for serious recording people. Can anyone explain to me in laymen terms, what they do and how I can use an oscillator to improve my recording? I have Emu1212m soundcard and it has DSP which has some test-tone generating function.

thanks

Hey RO'ers, I just wanted to know what are your thoughts on listening to commercial music on your monitors to compare it to some of your own tracks? I notice that when I listen to a commercial song on my studio monitors the sound is bright and clear and I can tell what mastering has done to that track to get it to soundthat way.

What to use to test out reference monitors?

I'm interested in purchasing a pair of reference monitors (my budget is around $300-350 US). I'd like to know what are some good CDs or sounds to use to do a comparison test and what are some important things to listen for during the comparison.

btw, I'm considering between ESI nEar05 eXperience and KRK Rokit Powered 5 (RP5).

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.
