Sweeter? How do I know what you think is sweeter? How would you know what I think is sweeter?

Why don't you ask yourself WHAT YOU THINK and what you feel about them as you will be one using them. Try them both and let your self be the judge. That is what you should do.

What? Haven't heard them?

You wouldn't be that naive and clueless to just buy a mic based on what one or a few people say in a internet forum? Or would you?

listen bud, if i had the opportunity to try them that would be great but I dont know anyone who has these mics , nor there is a place for me to rent and try em out myself. For this reason I posted what I did for anyone who had in fact listened to these mics or had owned one in the past with a Great River. These forums are for people to help people based on experiences right. If there is nothing nice you can post for someone who is beginning, then dont post nothing at all. Just remember you yourself were also a beginner.

I have never tried the TLM49 but I`m really satisfied with my U195 (got 2 of them) I have the old Soundelux U195, not the Bock, but from what I hear it`s basically the same mic.

If u check out http://www.torleifmadsen.com , song number 10 "hallelujah" (jeff buckley cover) was recorded in my studio.

Vocals: U195 through a Great River Mp2nv
guitar: U195 / Royer 121 through a Great river Mp2nv

I use the U195 a lot... mostly Vocals, drum OH and ac.guitars

Twood,
checked out your track "Halleuja" that you posted on your link here. Wow, thanks for sharing! That sounds great! I guess they don't call it great river for nothing, huh? A great improvement from the normal mic pre.
I have been thinking about upgrading to a decent mic pre and I am quite impressed by the the improvement these make on the final product. Im starting to think about the API 3124+ and this great river MP2nv and when I will be able to spend the dough. There is many lower cost mic pre available, however there is the quality issue. I need quality, to me its worth the extra $. Its the difference between good and Great! Its very interesting to get a taste of what's hot and fresh out there on this forum.

Thanks, Bret

Wow - I'm new here but I thought the guy asked a fair enough question. He asked for opinions from people who had similar equipment to comment on a mic that would give a "sweeter" sound. Instead of using your imagination to interpret "sweeter" as "great" or whatever, some of you jumped all over him. Of course the answer requires a subjective response but everything in music is subjective. Hopefully the majority of people here are more considerate and respectful than the few who responded to this thread.

CB - There was nothing wrong with the original question other than that it wasn't very well thought out if he was expecting much of a response.

Mistake 1: He was asking about a specific preamp and two specific mics. And we are not talking about really basic, widely used products here. I don't know if you know anything about probabilities but the likelihood that someone has tried these combinations is pretty small.

Mistake 2: Instead of leaving the question open-ended and asking for opinions and experiences he asks which is "sweeter." A silly word to obscure the fact that he is looking for a no information thumbs-up/down evaluation rather than real information.

Mistake 3: (which I think really did him in) After 12 hours of hearing the crickets chirping he whines that no one is giving him free advice.

That's a pretty good recipe for getting mild abuse. Works pretty much every time.

My take on this Mr. CB, anyone that has spent $5K +/- on two pieces of gear for a specific purpose and is considering spending another grand or so on a mic also used for a specific purpose, should have better reasoning ability then to use subjective open-ended terminology in subjective open-ended discussions.

Sweet!

Twoods comments were helpful without being critical - and I've heard many a good engineer refer to sounds as being "warm" or "harsh" or "bright" etc. Sometimes people just want the opinions of others with similar (or specific) equipment. The fact that the question was asked on this forum could be taken as a compliment to the high regard that some have for the opinions of those here.

It's Christmas Eve - Merry Christmas!
