A Neumann U47fet is an excellent mic. It's generally great on male vocals especially and is a great lo-end mic as well. I love it as the outside mic for kick drums, and bass amp cabinets.
That said, I do not think it would be the best choice for you situation.
Even better for vocals, generally. are tube mics.

I's check out (budget constraints allowing) either the original or clone of the following: Neumann , AKG Telefubnken (U47, U67, M49,C12,ELAM250, ElAM251).
That said; some of the mics mentioned are very expensive if you can find them, and being so old they all sound differrent. So that means I'd look into a clone of the above mics.
If cost isn't an issue I'd recommend the Brauner VM1 Klaus Heine edition, the best modern mic I've used (best in the relative sense). It has amazing headroom (you'll never overload it) is open and beautiful sounding. They make a "cheaper" version the VM1 that's still great and they make a slightly inexpensive "valvet" model tha's great as well.

Be carefull as just about all of the great older vintage mics have been plucked by now and the rest that are readily available are likely to have some sort of issue with them and they keep going through the same bought and sold cycle. So unless you have a good realtionship with the person of place selling, I'd be very leary and cautious.

All of the clone makers of new mics based on the great old vintage mics are very good and will give you the same sound with a worry free future.

The Brauner VM1 Kluas Heine edition is one of the best of the newer mic designs currently being made. It is as awsome as it is beautiful and while it is not the perfect mic, it also never seems to disappoint. The new Telefunken ELAM 251 re-issue is as good as the original and could very well be the best overall vocal mic you could ever own. The Soundelux Tube E47 is also a wonderfull vocal mic and is as good as any vintage U47. These are of course all priced as flagship mics as well.

On the cheap side of new mics you might get by with a Audio-Technica AT4047, AT4060, Neumann M149, M150, BLUE Bottle or KIWI, Soundelux U99, U195, IFET7, The Brauner Valvet Voice or Phantom C, Microtech Gefell UMT 800.

I bought a pre "voice" Valvet, and thought it was horribly brash.I got rid of it very quickly. At $2400, I thought it was a rip. Now for the same price, I got a Lawson L251. Great Bargain, beautful mic!
And for a rediculous bargain, may I humbly suggest you try the Micreotec Geffel M930 - about $700 a couple years ago.

we sent the telefunken Elam 251 back as soon as it was in a trial against a M49, a tube47, and an 87, but the 87 was the best... the woman who we used it on had a great opera voice...

(I did manage to snag a Telefunken sticker that came with the mic tho. :D )

the m49 sounded AWFUL(which suprissed the hell out of me, but it did) the 47 was OK and the 251 was brittle.... normally I do not care for the 87 on vox...

Had I ordered the mic, I would have prolly kept it for a bit longer and tried some more typical vocals on it other than opera...

Don't mics also have a run in period like other gear?
Especially with those who uses transformers and good caps.

Some gear actually has a run in period of close to 1 year!!

I mean ofcouse it has to sound ok or good at the beginning, but I don't think it can outperform anything or sound as good as it really is before it has been used for quite a while, maybe some month or so...

IT WAS THE FIRST TIME I'VE EVER HEARD OF THE BRAUNER VM-1 , AND THIS BABY IS LOOKING GOOD !

BUT I BELIVE I WILL TRY TO GET MYSELF A USED SOUNSELUX , DID ANYBODY EVER COMPARE THE U99 TO THE E251 AND THE E47 ?
