how does adobe audition 1.5 stack up against say 2.0 or 3.0, I'm looking to upgrade but if there isn't that much of a difference, and Pro Tools requires additional hardware, would anyone suggest a certain recording program over another?

I think 3.0 has new noise reduction, pop/click removal, and audio restoration plugins. I think it has some new multi-track editing features (as in adjust the pan on 6 tracks at once). I really can't find any use for the noise reduction stuff. I love the compression plugins, though. And the mastering tools are great too. Nice multiband compressor as well. But, when it comes down to it, I think the real upgrades in 3.0 are in noise removal, and I don't use that, because my equipment doesn't suck. I got my copy at Studica for a stupidly low price, but only because I could send them a verification that I was still a college or high school student.

I use 1.5 for everything, and my friend has 3.0. I absolutely CANNOT STAND 3.0! They cluttered the entire interface so there are buttons everywhere. I had to look all over the place before I saw how to go from the edit view to the multitrack view. I wouldn't upgrade.

3.0 is the first version of Audition I've used, however, I have a hard time believing that 3.0 doesn't have superior plugins to 1.5. I will say that Audition is rather different from other programs, but once you get the hang of it, it makes sense. I do have to agree with sarNz a bit, though, as I still have to ask my more experienced friends as to how to do a certain thing, because I can't figure out how to do ____ just by clicking around. It is a bit frustrating, but I do think that Audition 3.0 has the best plugins for real musicians I've used. The compression is fantastic.

I can't tell you about versions but I can tell you that the current Audition was my choice after a horrendous evaluation process. Audition seems to have been made for real grownups. It has less crxpola than anything else but Audacity, and Audacity is great for tracking but not for anything else.
