I am currently using a PreSonus Tube Pre as well as Mackie and Behringer board preamps with a CAD GXL 2200 and am not unhappy with sound. The GXL 2200 is very clean if a little on the bright side, and the PreSonus has tons of gain. I am looking to add another vocal mic or 2 and a quality preamp. I am considering the Safesound P1 and the Speck Model 5. I'd like to keep the preamp under $1000.00 and still get great quality and versatility. For the mic, I have been considering the RODE NT2000, AT 4033, or CAD VSM.
How would you compare the Safesound P1 and the Speck as fal as thier ability to produce a warm silky vocal? And are that other preamp's in my price range that I may have missed?

Telefunken V72 or TAB V72a.
"Warm silky vocals" no problem.

The Speck 5.0 .. I have used this one .. There are some audio snips of stuff recorded through 5.0 in the Reviews section of RO, take a listen and judge for yourself.
The 5.0 is very good but hardly what I would call "warm & silky". It leans a little more to the "fast and accurate" side IMO.
For the "warm & silky" sound, it's hard to beat a Vintage Neve, the GR MP2NV or the Vintech stuff (both variants of the Neve). Most other Neve clones, I don't like much, for one reason or another.
For 1k per channel I would have to vote for the Great River ME-1

It's incredible, everything sounds great thru it, it will hold it's value long after lesser pres have been forgotten.

A single channel of John Hardy M1 is within your $ range as well
