I owned one of the first ones that came off of the lines. I can unequivically reccommend it for vocals with one cavet.

This mic does not sound like a condenser mic.

THe beauty of ribbon mics in general, especially this one is the fact that it dosen't have the unnatural high end etchiness that a condenser has... It really stands out in a mix. Because of the unhyped top end, i haven't had the sibialnce problems i usually have with large condensers.

The r84 does have a pronounced proximity effect, but i find i can use this to my benifit, especially for male vocal where i want the chesty low end on a somewhat weaker voice... a couple db dip in the midrange corrects that and brings out some of the smooth top end

Preamp wise, i've had good luck with ones that offer low imput impedences. My ward beck gives the mic a really thick sound, while my benchmark accentuates the high end a bit more.
