i want to get a pre for my home studio but also use it at gigs for my bass. i saw a guy using an Avalon u5 last night and his rig sounded sweet! i`ve heard good things about the brick also. i`d like to use the pre i get for guitar an vocals and whatever. any suggestions. budget is a consideration.

If you're looking at a straight DI though, also check out the Radial J48. It's an AMAZING sounding DI (I prefer it over the avalon on some sources - particularly jazz guitar and jazz bass as well as upright bass with pick-up). The price on it is great too. You could get it AND the brick for the same price as the U5.

Along the same lines, Tech21 also makes rack mount preamps such as the PSA-1 or the RBI. You can probably find one on eBay for $300.
