I'm not sure the U5 has a mic pre. I know the M5 does but I'm thinking the U5 is a direct box only while the brick is a direct box and mic pre.

The U5 is only a direct box. One of the finest direct boxes available, but it has no mic pre functionality.

Yes, the U5 is a sweet DI. It's one of the only Avalon pieces I would buy.

If you're looking at a straight DI though, also check out the Radial J48. It's an AMAZING sounding DI (I prefer it over the avalon on some sources - particularly jazz guitar and jazz bass as well as upright bass with pick-up). The price on it is great too. You could get it AND the brick for the same price as the U5.

i have used a U5 before. they are reliable pieces of equipment.
i would recommend that.

I own a U5, it sounds fantastic.
It also sounds nice on acoustic guitar as well.

GT have a DI-only Brick too, called the Ditto. It's cheaper.

I use a Brick for live stage and recording. It excels at both. Lee Sklar uses
one too. Pretty good endorsement I would say !!

Along the same lines, Tech21 also makes rack mount preamps such as the PSA-1 or the RBI. You can probably find one on eBay for $300.

got the brick, sounds great recording my bass. used it on keys too. sounds good! i dont have any other pre or di to compare it too(yet) but my recordings are sounding a lot better so far. it`s a big improvement.

i was going to say look into an a-designs reddi but looks like you already got the brick. thatll work too.
