Okay, total newbie question here regarding my fresh outta the box Firepod.

Do I install the firmware update with the Firepod connected or disconnected to my G5? Does it matter?

The manual states: [chapter 2.2]
YOU MUST INSTALL SOFTWARE DRIVERS BEFORE CONNECTING YOUR FIREPOD .

Driver & Firmware Update Instructions page on the PreSonus website state:
VERY IMPORTANT : Do not allow the firewire or power connection to become disconnected during the Firmware update. If this happens, the Firepod can be rendered inoperable, and will need to be serviced.

I run a Dual 2GHz PPC with 2.5 GB RAM.
I understand that the Firepod drivers are included in the CORE AUDIO of the OS.
But perhaps I do not understand the difference/definitions between driver & firmware.
Can somebody please explain?

Ah, simple answer for ya.

The driver is a little piece of software that sits on your computer and allows the card to communicate with your recording software.

The firmware is a hard coded operating system that sits on the Firepod, basically it's the Firepod's "brain".

So, you're doing a driver install, not a firmware update. Nothing to worry about.
