I'm looking to build a home studio just to mess around on and record demos or whatever. I'm looking to spend in the range of 2000-2500. I know its not a lot but I have no idea what i'm supposed to get. I"m going to be recording a band I know i need to be able to record more than 4 or 8 tracks at once. I'm just all confused on what I need. Would it be better to get a standalone mixer/recorder or do it on my pc? Is there a website that breaks down all the different parts and why its needed and what it does? I searched but i dont really know what to search for. Any help is appriciated. Thanks

If I were in your position, I would go with a stand-alone unit by Zoom or Boss with CD burner, about 4 SM57 microphones, mic stands, XLR cables for them, AKG, Sony, or Sennheiser headphones, and you would be OK. Easy solution. Plug-and-Play.
After you learn about recording, you can sell the digital recorder and go computer-based with your efforts.
