I've been pretty pleased with Audix. I picked up one of the D-Series kits. The newer kits contain the D6, which in my opinion is an excellent kick mic.

I'd say they're a great buy for home or small commercial studios......

Check out the evolution series by Sennheiser also. e602 for kick and e604 for toms. I know they sell the 604's in a 3 pack, don't know if they do a whole set.

Ive also had a great experience with the shure 6-mic set, comes with PGs not SMs but ive heard they're made in china which is why they're cheaper but they are comparable in sound...Only $350 i think, comes with mounts and cables, everything. I enjoy it alot being only a beginner but I think they sound absolutely great. but if you're looking for something really studio-quality I suggest Audix.

I bought the Audix DP2 kit (I think) about 3 years back. It had 2x D-2's, 1x D-1, and 1x D-4. I like the D-2's on toms (and bought another one, too), and occasionaly use the D-1 on snare. I'm not quite in the ranks with others on this forum, but they appear to be fantastic. I use them for my band's rehearsal recordings, AND for tracking (I have to dual purpose practically all of my stuff :( )

I think I paid $325~ish for the 4Pc kit WITH hard case - less than $100 per mic. Hard to beat that quality for that price IMO.

Lots of good companies out there doing drum mic kits.

Sensheiser - good, but pricey. no extras, like mounts.
Shure PG - good buy. everything included.
Samson 7 kit - good buy, includes some decent overheads which can double for vocals, acoustic, etc. includes crappy mounts.
Audix - great sounding drum mics.

I'll have to add the I really like the Audix D2's also. The D1 never impressed me, but I do love the D6 on kick.

I used to have the audix fussion 6 mic kit and I liked it and used it. I've noticed, though, that they changed the mics from d series to f series- is the change just in name or are they totally different mics?

I'm fairly sure the Fusion's use different capsules and bodies. :cool:

the audio technica kick pak is decent, no complaints

comes with 2 snare/tom mics that should be used for toms

and 2 tom/kick mics which should be used for toms
kick will be ok in a really big pinch

havent tried the snare/toms on the snare jsut using a 57

That D6 if really nice for kick, It somehow manages to make people with very different tastes happy and I have been able to get good tones out of it ranging from hardcore to jazz. I am not so familiar with the Sennheiser drum pack, but on another note, I once played sax at a live gig, and the engineer set me and the trumpet up with the sennheiser tom mics ,I think the e604 mentioned above (the little guys that clip onto the rim). I thought it was just because they were under stocked, but the sound was surprisingly good cut through very well, nice clean sound that didn’t block out everything else (pop/funk type horns).

Nowadays there are some excellent mid range (price mics) and most quite good! The D6 is the only one that really jumps out at me (and it really jumps out, very versitile and manages to be good in many styles, not just passable), but of the kits mentioned above get what you can find the best deal on.

Check ebay to see what the resale values are, within a year or so you may be wanting to sell some of the mics and keep others. The sennheisers, audio technicas and Audix I bet will hold their value more just because of the name.
