Hi, i'm looking for a few expert recording engineer sugguestions on how to possibly improve a guitar sound a bit. Firstly, i'll give a little background on my setup. I'm running three mics: One cardioid to isolate the sound, one condenser for a little bit of crispness and a tube in the room. I am happy with the initial sound i'm getting running two of these mics (one compressed) from a processor into two separate analog mixer channels and one mic directly(condenser) to a mixer channel. I then send all three of these mics out together bused (one line) as a stereo pair (L&R), compress again, then to an external converter and go optical into a single track into my multi-track software. My question is would I be better off running more than one stereo pair to my converters (separate for each mic) into my software, recording more than one track simultaniously? I'm wondering if i'll achieve a slight bit better edge on my sound somehow that way.. or perhaps I should also compress the other two mics and stick to running them all together as one line into a single track. Thx for any helpful sugguestions, opinions or info from any knowlegable engineers. ~Jp, "The Box", Minnesota, US

omg, i just read the whole freakin' thing. Wow, i just wasted a lot of my life away. I think it was worth it just to get a laugh out of.

u guys think maybe he actually realized he was wrong/found out what he needed to find out?.... or just...beh screw it man. JP22 is a total idiot who refuses to learn anything..... it's actually sort of sad...

btw, this thread and forum are link to these two sites now :) :

Wow... that must be some setup! So intricate that it is impossible to describe his recording chain or even name what "top of the line converter" and compressor/limiter he is using.

Very funny thread, by the way. I found out about and joined this forum all thanks to this thread. :)

I just spent a whole friggin hour reading this post. I ignored it to begin with (apparently for a long time).

First, I'd like to say -

Brian and McCheese - in a totally Platonic way, I think I love you guys :!: Please, never leave!

Second -

JP22 should be nominated as RO's "Poster of the Year." He single handedly brought more members to RO with one post than all the advertising Chris (audiokid) could do in a year!

Third -

In case JP22 is still reading this thread -

YOU'RE A FUCKING MORON!!!!

And please, read through all of my other 1200 posts to see if I've EVER used that language in a post before.... NOPE. That's how strongly I feel about this subject.

Oh, and thanks for ruining my kidneys - I've needed to piss since I started reading this thread, but couldn't pull myself away from the monitor....Hey, what's that warm sensation?? Gotta go.......

I rediscovered the site (even managed to recover my old password) thanks to this thread.

Thanks Jp22.

But... if you still read this, please try to shut the @#~ out of everyone one just by telling us two of your secrets:

1) What settings do you use to restore dynamics by using an equalizer?

2) Tell us about your setup, top grade converters and everything. Your imaginative use of technology does not cease to amaze me.

You have to share your secrets before anyone assists you. This is why everyone is jelous of your knowledge and behave like trolls in *your* topic.

Please, come back and enlighten us.

O.K.
I did. It seems you are in love with most of the audio guys on this site. And the fact is, some of us are getting concerned about "how" much you are in love. (and how many of them are you sleeping with?)
I mean pretty soon, you're going to cut yor hair like Brian, put on a hat like McCheese and dance around naked for AudioGaff, while holding hands with Walters and JP22(or anything else that sticks out far enough and will fit in you're hand)
Now there's a "Poster of the Year"!

Maybe we could call it "For the Love of RO?"
I see in another thread, where you admit "you love AudioGaff" as well. Does AudioGaff know you are such a slut? Better get some condoms, and maybe a "wiffle ball bat". (or 2)
Maybe you can change your screen name to Bukkake. Get some fake breast(s) put on some clean panties, and someone will "love you too".

Or course once you change the way you look, you will no longer be able to get paid doing your 5 or 6 shows a year doing "RuPaul" look alike guest appearances.

I really appreciate all the folks that have joined in the fray due to the arrogance and ignorance of one incredibly stupid jag-off.

My hope is you'll all find this a pleasant and informative place to check into from time to time.....Perhaps even enlightening us regulars with your particular takes on all things recording.

As the Moderator of this forum its my duty to keep things clean and usefull as far as information exchange goes. But then I'm an olde rock-n-roller and shit like this doesnt even phase me!

I'm seeing several suggestions to sticky or lock it so, I'd like a vote from all that are reading this.

Lock it?

Or Not?

Find jp22 and make him president?

It yer call readers......

The Humble Moderator.

Reggie Mon, 10/03/2005 - 19:33

Yeah, this guy is likely to become the William Hung of internet forums at this pace. Can't we get his avatar picture on the RO homepage or something?

My personal vote goes for no lock, but post it as a sticky for 2-3 weeks so people can pay their respects; and then throw it in the Trash Bin so it can die a peaceful death, but leave it in there (don't delete) for newcomers to reference. It'd be a shame to lose this golden comedy material.
Eh?

And JP, if you are still out there: Don't kill yourself. This will all blow over in time dude.

Alright "It's That Guy Again" - you got me back for my virtually identical crack at you regarding your love for a certain other moderator...

The only difference is, I didn't have anything about these guys in my signature for months and go around professing that EVERYTHING these guys say MUST be the truth in almost every post.

So, laugh it up - I can take it as well as I dish it, but realize that no one else really understands your feeble attempt at humor here.

Besides, the geek in question on this post is:

Dear Recording.org forum members,

I had a tremendous time reading this thread, I bow repectfully at its greatness. Now, next time you find a clueless idiot of this caliber, can you please re-direct him to the MARSH at Prosoundweb.com when you are done with him. We got to share those jewels and treasure them, they are unfortunatly too rare.

Again

Thank you, thank you, thank you :D

PS:

JP22: you must be a living god among morrons. Next time I will note morrons, I'll use your name as a new unity of measure.

you score 1 jp22©.

I never met nobody scorung more than 0.2/0.3 jp22 so far.

Gentlemen, esteemed guests and honored speaker,

I, too, came here from the land of the [="http://marsh.prosoundweb.com"]MARSH[/]="http://marsh.prosou…"]MARSH[/] where this thread has [become famous[/]="http://marsh.prosou…"]become famous[/].

I would like to extend my thanks to JP22, Mayor McCheese and everyone else that made this genuine jewel of a thread possible. I agree with Malice that when discussing moronity one should use JP22's name as synonymous with "the greatest of morons" similar to the way one uses Rube Goldberg's name to describe a process too complicated for its goal. Indeed, one should study JP22 for evidence of smaller idiots circling in his immense stupid gravity. It may even be possible for JP22 to idiotize others just by rubbing himself against them.

I'd love to post more, but I need to go home immediately to practice the 3 mic/2 compressor/1 "processor"/stereo input/multi-bused guitar method.

With love and gratitude,
Shotgun

For the love of God!
This is funny.
Jp22, I think you'll find that Mr McCheese and co are quite correct in their advice to you.
I'm not gonna blow my own trumpet in any way.
I've got a degree in Music Production, so know a bit about recording, and really you have not made any sense at all. People have tried to offer advice, but you seem to correct them at every opportunity.Don't mean to be blunt mate, but they DO know what they're talking about and frankly........... you don't.

Try listening
:)

anonymous Tue, 10/04/2005 - 08:51

I vote sticky and keep it open. For a while. Until all the latecomers flooding in from our bretheren communities have a chance to pay their respects and announce their arrival. I for one am interested to see JUST how much new blood Jp22 is capable of bringing to RO. So far, he is the best advertising you could never want.

anonymous Tue, 10/04/2005 - 09:22

And for the record JP22....

The term "To Tape" does mean recording on any medium, digital or analog. Its just a term, and sometimes you will also hear "I'm printing this take now". or the one I like to say to an artist is... "The track is armed this time, I am going hot!"

And the razors and rubbing alcohol are for linear editing (analog tape).

Distortion does have similaities to that of a compressor, a limiter is a compressor with all the knobs basically turned to max.

McCheese's analogy about distored waveforms appearing as an almost solid block on a graph is right on the money, squeezed sounds usually look like solid blocks that have little or no dynamics (peaks and valleys) to them.

Whew I almost sounded like I knew what I was talking about!?! :)

anonymous Tue, 10/04/2005 - 12:42

woooweee

I found this through musicthing, read it and almost wept with laughter. Had to register and say hi

Hi all!

this guy´s a bona-fide genius, probably less talented than http://www.leoncie-music.com/, check it out, confusingly, you have to click on the picture of the artist with a red border and wearing a bit of a red dress against a large blue background. This is only confusing ´cause the text helpfully explains that you must click the red picture.

I aldo think the advertiser for this forum must have dreamt this up, no way can a real person be that entertaining :D

anonymous Tue, 10/04/2005 - 14:45

Wow, the buzz about this thread is spreading like wildfire. I had to toss in my two cents...

/set pwn_mode on

JP22... here's a quick guide to recording your guitars, compression, etc... you can call it, "Audio Engineering for JP22s"

Step 1: Lay out a tarp in your parents' garage so as to allow for easy cleanup.
Step 2: Remove the knit vest your mother made for you 10 years ago. She would hate it if you made it messy.
Step 3: Place your lips around the business end of your daddy's shotgun, but be careful not to get any of your drool on it, as this may promote oxidization.
Step 4: Press on the metal switch hanging from the bottom of the barrel until you hear the perfect mix.
Step 5: If you are reading this step, that means you were too retarded to realize you needed to load up some shells and should opt for a swan dive off of an interstate bridge. I hear speeding Mac trucks are very good at giving advice.
(partial credit/reference to the hillarious "Farm Sex" short on the web)

Or you could just take this advice:

You are a n00b. Don't ask questions, then pretend to be the expert. You act like some women I dated in the past. If you think you know the answer, then why are you asking the pros? Just ask your questions, be humble, ask more questions, give thanks, and don't be an asshole.

And just to drive home the use of the term "tape," it's used all over where it isn't actually going on tape. I don't even have a VCR hooked up in my house, and I use Comcast DVR, but I and all my friends still talk about shows that I've "taped" with it.

You've lost this flame war. The only reason I signed up for an account on this board was to further emphasize that.

Up until now, I was simply amazed at JP's abilities..... NOW I'm moved . To actually bring Marshites here with just a simple explanation of the Physics and the True Realities of recording electrical guitars is without a doubt the GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT in the History Of Man......

Well, okay, Spam rates a close second, and of course theres The Walters Factor......

Hopefully, JP is patiently waiting for all of us to express our gratitude to Himself for the great favor He has bestowed upon our unwashed and feeble minds, and will enlighten us further with a dramatic and well-timed display of His Illustrious Knowledge of All Things.

Or he has slunk out back of the chickens and done hisself in....

Either way.......... :!:

Reggie Tue, 10/04/2005 - 17:35

Hey, I'd wear that on a shirt. Group buy? Of course we'll need to design 7 different shirts featuring various famous Jp22 quotes so I can wear one each day of the week.

And dang it arikol, now I'm gonna have [="link removed Crazy Cop"[/]="link removed Crazy Cop"[/] by Leoncie in my head all blasted night!

Andy, put JP's shovel down! :P Man, what a fantastic f'in thread; I was going to link you up this morning when you got to work, but looks like you already beat me to the punch with this one. :o

TheBadAssCanadian wrote: ... Clipping does not mean err..." clipping" the tops of the wave form with a compressor, like it's some sort of hedge or shrub that needs grooming.

Clipping is distortion.

You're definition of "clipping" is our definition compressing/limiting, or at least that's what i can gather from what you've said ...

I was wondering how long it'd take someone to catch on to that, I was planning on posting the same thing.

TO MR. JP22, might you have time in your busy schedule to reverse the effects of a 32 kbps MP3 encoding back into the original lossless wav for me through your revolutionary EQ boosting techniques? I've tried inserting 100% wet reverb and cranking my gain (positive values in decibels are good, right??) - but that didn't clear up the sound. Please help! Thanks!!

.........I know, I know...cheap shot.

anonymous Wed, 10/05/2005 - 03:12

I actually think it's an amazing thing that JP22 probably still thinks he's right.... wherever he is by now.....

i mean come on, why would so many other people be against him?

EQ just simply doesn't control dynamics.... i think his definition of dynamics is off....... no no no, i don't think that. I know that as a fact. he just has a really bad..... brain??

I don't know man, but you guys will definitely see me posting in these forums and stuff.
