Me and my band are planning on getting a whole in ear monitoring system and drum mics to run loops and stuff. We already found our stuff for in ears, but I was wondering what could be a good option for the drum mics. I'm only looking for Shure stuff since we're getting a really good discount on them, but I still don't wanna go with the most expensive stuff out there.
We'd also be using this setup to record but it's mostly for live, so if anyone can help me out with this, it would be appreciated

Did you listen to the sticky(s) snare and bass drum samples at the top of the forum? The 52a is on the list, notice the conspicous absence of the 56a from the snare list even though several other shures are on the list. I use 57s on toms frequently with good results. The sm81 are good condensers but you posted in pro recording and I'll bet you would not find these in most studios mic lockers, in great rooms engineers tend to use large diameter condensers. Those won't be a good choice live.
Mics are like pie, apple for some blueberry for others. You might want to rethink the snares mics but otherwise.....

What???? SM-81's make very good OH's and are used extensively in "pro studios" because they ARE SDC's. Many times SDC's are used in OH apps because they are less prone to off-axis coloration. they have a nice "sheen" that an LDC may not deliver.
BTW, SM-81's are used throughout the free world for all sorts of stringed instruments and piano...as well as overheads.
Furthermore, I have a pair of SM81s that I use LIVE all the time because the show riders that I get spec them as OH's...

Just to clarify because when I read this again my writing was not very clear. When I wrote "those" I meant large diameter condensers were probably not a good choice for live sound. I could see where someone might have thought I meant the sm81s.

If I had to mic drums I would get a Shure KSM32 for a mono overhead, Beta52 for the kick, SM57 for snare and what ever money was left over would get more SM57s for "other stuff", But if you tune the drums right and the player is good you can get really good drum sound with just the 3 mics.
