Hello All. I am new to the recording world. I really just want to record my Friend who plays the Bass and I (guitar) in an mp3 format.
I just got the program called Audacity, and well it does all that for me wonderfully! PS: I am using a $10 mic.

My question is ...
Are there way to get better sound quality out of the music? Or is that is that all in the mic?

:)

My Amp is a VOX AD30VT - Amazing sounds out of that machine!

Many here are more qualified to speak on the recording (it sucks, BTW).

I am more qualified to speak on the "playing." I have recorded jams that suck, but I am usually too proud or easily embarassed to put them up.

Just like Dylan made many people say "screw it" with regard to singing, I say screw it about posting my clips. I will in the future.

Whew!

I think you have some talent, but it seems like you are going out of your way to sound wild, with no thought or purpose behind it.

About the $10 mic: I understand more than you would ever imagine about lack of money. But I continually tell people here that claim that to start getting rid of their extra junk that is not music-related that they have no time for anymore, anyway. Don't ski anymore? Sell those old skis to the used sporting goods store, and buy a better mic. Comics or other collectibles? Sell. How serious are you about capturing your guitar amp's sound faithfully? After you trim all the fat, then you can be officially broke.

This was posted in the wrong section. Had you researched just a LITTLE bit more, you would have realized that there are a couple of sections devoted to people with a minimal budget.
To answer your question, there is an old Confucious saying: " When someone puts garbage in, all that comes out is garbage"....A $10 mic is garbage. Now go play in the street..Daddy here's a gabage truck coming.

I See ...

I understand where you are coming from with the cheap mic. Now I am not trying to start a brawl, as I just was looking for some honest answers from possibly "People" who May know what they are talking about, as everyone starts off somewhere, just so you know - as I was not sure if you were trying to be crude or sarcastic, but the next time you try ... here's should of been spelt hears

When posting as a newbie on a messageboard, be prepared to get kicked a couple of times.

Anyway, what he said is pretty much on... I said it in your other thread. Big bucks isn't always the answer for everything, I know that as well as the next guy. If you're looking to record your guitar with a full tone, go down to a local music shop that has used pro audio equipment and try to pick up a Shure SM57 mic. You can generally find a used one that is all scratched up but sounds fine. They're built pretty well and will run you less that $75 used, less than $90 new. And, something that *looks* like a SM57 isn't worth it.

But, then again, I'm assuming that you have a way to get an XLR or balanced input into your PC. If not, we can come up with a cheap way to do that.

But, with the $10 mic, you can mess around... just don't expect good results. You won't get tone anywhere close to what you want.

Cool, it's a pretty standard mic, there are millions of them floating around.
It's not that you "have to have that model of mic for guitar tone!", but it's reliable and cost-friendly. Plenty of pros still use them, and yet they're inexpensive. They're made for instruments (great for guitars), but can double as a vocal mic if you need to do that as well.
