well it depends on your budget.

If you can spend around $250 yu can consider an EMU 0404 or an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 ($100)
Then you could look at one of the cheap Beringher mic pres for about $50

And then checkout maybe one of the cheap MXL condensers or even a Shure SM57. ($70 - $90)

Just over 200 bucks.

If you wantreally cheap then get the soundblaster, with the said mic pre and a cheap condenser ($50)

for that price condesadors maybe only the mxl's

as for cool edit pro it's very simple! you have multitrack and only one track! if you want to record something record and then mess around with it! try everything! this way you'll learn!
