I'm sure this has been asked before, but how many of you track WITH EQ? I know mic and preamp preamp choice in addition to placement should cover most of this, but how many of you EQ it up some as it goes to Tape? How much typically? I would also ask how many of you compress (By processing, not natural or tape saturation) to tape and on what and how much typically?

How does this change when you record to digital vs tape and what aspects of it all?

Personally I am more interested in digital as it is the primary format I work in. However I welcome the education from both perspectives!

I'm asking for the generalities here not how every session can require a different approach.

TIA,

yeah, record good tight direct quick sounds.
going through more circuitry actually slows your sound down (resolution) and can narrow sonic spectrum :(

*I never gate to tape/digital
*I may use a bit of EQ if I really need it
(don't want to get to carried away now......)
*I usually compress Vox and Bass to tape/digital 'cause i know i'm almost always going to do it later anyway,so it makes things (setting up for mixing)quicker.
*If i'm recording to analog/tape i'll usually record a bit bright becuase tops always go first after so many tape passes.

I used to compress a lot more to tape (with my DBX-160's :D ) but now realise to leave things a bit open for mastering. :s:

In regards to my foray into hard disk DAW recording vs. 2" analog or tape based digital (like ADATS) through a large format console, I am learning there is a whole world of difference! It seems in the DAW just a touch of compression or eq radically changes things where in analog it would take a much heavier handed approach. With analog or ADATS I will gate, compress, and eq to tape. Many shudder at the thought of gating to tape but I do it regularly. I hate amp hum, cymbal and hat spill! You just have to have the right gates. Drawmers 404's or 202's! I have found nothing else that works as well.

With DAW I am finding I have to go back and retrack some things if I use the same compression or eq techniques going to disk as I would going to tape or it keeps coming out sounding like that "Mutt Lange over compressed too in tune" thing, like it's been Pro Tooled to death. Man that sound is just too easy to get! :D I would actually prefer to eq and comp going in to the DAW if possible because I can hear the overall quality degrade, as more and more math is required to do additional processing ... but I think it's going to take a while before I get my bearings in this area. Until then I am holding off on the processing going in and doing it in the box. ……………. Fats

ACB,
I'm sorry about the emails. They seemed to be mass mailings to a bunch of us and I didn't think you expected replies. I will reply next time. Nothing personal... my wife just "loved" the hot dog one you sent. He he he … I have trouble opening some of those attachments however. If you really want a reply to something, just send a regular email.

I retired for a few reasons, one because I could, two because I have the urge to choke the sh*t out of most of my clients and if they're paying for services they deserve better than that. Three, I don't care for most of the new music styles that are prevalent these days (which leads us back to reason two) and fourth my ears aren't as good as they used to be so I can only work for a few hours before I have to stop. This can be very frustrating to paying clients. I am also concentrating on writing and producing publishing demos for myself to send out which is something I can never get around to when I'm running a commercial operation. There it is buddy.. in a nutshell. ....... Fats
