I actually really like ProTools. Sure I hate some of the ideals that Avid has but I like the way ProTools works. I like the way the mixes come out. I'm always sure that the mix that I do will be the end result. That is something that I have not found with other software. It's easy to insert a plug somewhere that just turns everything to mud. But, you won't hear that until you've exported the mix. That is my experience with offline exporting. I was an "avid" Cubase user for a long time. I still like Cubase but I wish there was an option to do a "live" export so that I could hear what's going on.

ProTools 8 is a great DAW. I have many, many complaints about it but there is so much potential for it to be beyond awesome. If only the fools at Avid would gingerly remove their heads from their sphincters. Simple things like expanding their hardware support and adding Automatic Plugin Delay Compensation. Come on guys! Delay compensation! It's a bare necessity. If they only made those slight adjustments, I know I would have found my ideal DAW.

But alas. They ignore the pleas of their USERS!

It's a love hate thing. I will probably continue using ProTools and I will likely upgrade to the next incarnation of the Digi 004(?). In fact I'm anticipating that they will make some drastic changes very, very soon. I'm not holding my breath but I'm hoping.

Until then, at least I have Samplitude.

Awesome, a PT gripe thread! I want to be able to turn input monitoring OFF in PT LE. "Low Latency Monitoring" translates to "Too Much Latency Monitoring" in my view. I split after outboard preamps to an analog mixer for zero latency and I have to set up sends on the 7/8 outputs to make it work. This entails a bunch of muting/unmuting and some other gymnastics while tracking, but it beats the time smear built up with the standard PTLE monitoring arrangement. This is simply a non-issue when I'm working with the mixer/MOTU/Vegas rig at another studio.

Can it be true that PT still has no delay compensation?? I have left the PT train after a few weeks of testing which was disastroes (1993). In the early days of DAWs it was a pita to work with PT.
With the decision not to buy pt and all the related harware upgrades everytime they came up with something new we saved a lot of cash. Instead we decided for a native program, namely Nuendo.
With Nuendo we have Del comp for so long, you don't even think of it anymore...And, of course, realtime mixdown, where you hear what you get, too...
It will be very hard for some contender to beat Nuendo 5 which will be released in a few weeks. The latest feature set is amazing... Nice info you find on nuendo.com.

Following the topic: I have had PT representatives on my doorsteps for years and everytime a new PT + Hardware came out they claimed it was much better then its predecessor and the old stuff was really awfull... So, I would have been buying PT elite gear for big money and a few months later with the new PT comming out it was all crap?? No thank you!! After Digidesign has been eaten by Avid, I do not see a silver lining for the pro audio community. When I look at it, Avid and Co. are not really friendly towards PC users so I have my doubts that their latest aquisition, Euphonix, will continue the support for non Avid DAWs for long. Remember Wizoo Surround reverb W5 for PC? One of the best..Wizoo, when bought by DigiDesign, let it die. I am all for it to watch AVIDs moves very carefully and orientate my shopping away from that company. I am kind of glad that Steinberg is now owned by Yamaha. After all, it was pre-owned by Pinnacle which is now an AVID company, too.

ProTools LE has not Delay Compensation. You need to buy a plugin for that. TDM and HD systems do have Delay comp.

Haha hey man no worries. It was just you almost had me completely turn against Apple for a second! I'm a Logic guy at heart. And as such I must hate Pro Tools, even though I use it all the time. And the only real advantage I see to having it is the name. You say you have Pro Tools and people think you're more serious. I think this is such a sad misconception. A lot of people buy it only to be taken seriously. Especially when we're only talking about Native based, not HD. The serious engineer will make his dollars go further by using a software that works well for them, and not limit them. Sorry all you Pro Tools guys. I don't want to offend you. Just philosophical differences. And I still think Pro Tools is the best editor I've used, fast as lightning. I'll give it that for sure.

people kept on calling me and asking me if I had ProTools. I said no. I have Sony Vegas, Adobe Audition, Nuendo...." But we need to have ProTools because we need to make a professional recording..." So I got ProTools LE/M Powered. So now I rarely use it in favor of Sony Vegas, Adobe Audition. Kind of cool though in ProTools you stop a playback and the reverb continues until it fades out. Just like a real piece of hardware. And that's what's cool. But what I want my mix down done, I don't necessarily want to listen to it in real time until it's done, again. So if ProTools could ever mix down faster than real-time, I would play with it more.

If a customer asks what Daw you are using make yourself a small list with the most famous productions made on the DAW system you want to use. Mention them to the musician or customer in a casual conversation with some hints about how fast and reliable it is and how well it would work for his project, too. Don't forget to say a word or two about the good compatibility to other formats. In a number of cases you can convince them to try it with your software. When the job is done and everybody is satified they won't ask for PT the next time. Sure, it only works if your DAW is as fast, good and flexible, as you told them.

I have done that with Nuendo in the beginning, but that is a long time ago. Now, people come to my place to get the job done well with the sound they appreciate. They come for the studios sake not for a certain DAW I might use. There is so much more involved to run an excellent studio then just the choice of DAW.
