This specific question is very loosely about "recording", I guess. I need to know what to look for in a laptop audio-wise to play with Reason. My current (general-use) laptop won't even play back MIDI sound to install Reason. I just want to be able to fool around with ideas on the laptop, then bring the projects to my desktop. Controller input isn't even necessary.
Can anyone tell me what I should look for in a laptop, if I'm upgrading my current, just so that Reason will be usable? Any search I've done on MIDI and Laptops focuses on interfaces and input devices.

Thank you. That seems to have done the trick, on my current laptop no less! Although, I'm now wondering if I ever actually tried to install Reason on it. It's working without choosing ASIO4all in the sound settings. It's possible I just assumed it wouldn't work because MIDI didn't work when I installed a copy of Sonar.

ASIO and a full duplex soundcard for starters. Something with decent capacities if you're doing realtime stuff. Lots of ram, decent cpu specs. A video card worth a darn to free up cpu clocks. Basically any gaming type machine with a decent soundcard should do. If you don't need realtime or a lot of effects, you can get by with much less.
