Now...I am a youngun here..dont be too hard on me. This was one of my first concerts in the cathedral I work at.if not my first.

the chain was Neumann u87s( 1 meter apart, omni, on the pipe organ, 11' up, and 15' in front of the organ),
Gefell M270 pair on a jecklin disc directly in front of the trumpet(4'up, 5 ' in front of the trumpet).>>> pure silver XLRs(handmade, 15feet pairs)>>>PREs:Oade M148(handmade 2channel fixed gain jensen transformer based mic preamp)/lunatec v2(on the MG270s)>>>line in to a wendt x4 (4 channel in, 2 out mixer) line out to >>>mytek stereo 192, AES out to >>>sound devices 722 (recorded at 24/96)

Tracked with WAVELAB, resampled using wavelab resample 192 plugin (44.1khz), dithered using WAVES IDR dither plugin (16 bit)

no editing was done. just tracking and SRC/DITHER this is raw.

and finally encoded to mp3 with NERO.

I was kidding about the go easy part..i can take it. ;)

I really hate MP3..but dont have an ftp or anything.

I am still learning, and though ive come a long way since that gig, i am open for comments.

since then i have bought a 426b, schoeps, a bg1, millennia and other things..

and bear in mind..this is completely raw, no mastering whatsoever.

that cathedral is WET!

Bigray. Really good recording. I like it a lot.

Now, you asked for constructive critique. In that department all I can add is about taste. And in this case "where" the sounds are located. The organ sounds far away, the trumpet much closer. This may be what you wanted to achieve, or only a secondary effect. Personally I find the trumpet a bit too close, a bit too much in the face. On the other hand, if you go much farther away it might all end up in a great big reverbant mess.

Thanks for the critique, Gunnar. I tried several different positions and different volume levels for the two instruments. That place is so full of reverb that it seemed if I got too far away from the trumpet, it , like you said, ended up in a big mass of reverberant mess. That place is really strange and is about 300 years old..sounds like a reverb chamber almost. I will post clips of the mastered version a little later on. I really like this forum. :P

Well, I really like the sound !!! Obviously, this church is a great place to record !... :D

But maybe there's some little noise issue certainly emphasized because of the mp3 compression... Actually, there are 2 types of noise : one, normal, comes from the crowd listening to the music ; but i wonder what is and where does come from this very little noise with no reverb on it ?... as if one mic was handheld, or something was rubbing from time to time on a mic... i don't know.. very strange...

I dont know what you are talking about..but ok. The mp3 compression , after listening to the master file, does sound a lot different from the uncompressed WAV. As I mentioned , this is nowhere near finished, so i will post the mastered version later. I just wanted you guys to hear the acoustics of that place...it really is amazing! there are occasional little noises like people moving programs, the trumpet guy moved his score, one time a power surge caused an electrical noise in the church...typical stuff that can happen in a live setting...all will be handled in the mastered version.
