Any reason that it has to be a Dynamic?

re20 and sm7 come to mind.

Add the Sennheiser 421, as a possible(All are quite similar). Whichever of the above mentioned you buy, get the factory shockmount with it(You'll have plenty of money to do so with a thousand dollar budget.).

RE20 is a great dynamic mic for vocals.
Can handle kick drum and Bass Cab just as well....
Nice little roll off/proximity switch.

The SM7 can be a rather picky mic on some voices. When it sounds good, it is very good, but when it is bad... ugh...

My favorite dynamic vocal mic is the Sennheiser MD441 (431 if you need handheld), with the Beyer M88 being a close 2nd for some voices.

If you need a dynamic mic over a condenser for vocals, though I cant think of why, I would suggest seeing if anyone in town sells Avlex mics. There are like 3 vocal models but they are all very similar. I know they are unusual and extremely inexpensive ($100 CDN) but I was blown away with how much better the sound quality is over SM57 (which I used to use for live vocals) and SM58. They have an added octave above and below the SM58. The only dynamic mic I have used thats any better is the beta 87A... wait, I think that has a condenser in it.

Beta 87 is indeed a condenser...

FWIW, if you haven't tried dynamics, you can get some great vocals out of them. It is a different sound (just like a ribbon is a different sound), but it can be incredibly effective.

YEAH to that Ben. Theres been many occasions where the 'Big Boys' mics are up and we're moving em all over the room and changing preamps and compressors and compressor settings and trying to gobo back, front, sides, working the vocal booth, going outside on the patio, recording in the 'live' room(the loo for you english folks....) any thing to get that sound......and basically failing...Then you just give up and put up an SM58/MD421/MD441/PE545 and VOILA!! end of rant.

Love my 441...and it looks way cool in its Sabra-Som! Get them and add a nice boom (like a JTL) stand for a cool grand... 8-)

I'm just trying to think of why anyone would be surprised at using a dynamic for vocals... On rock & up, I don't think I've ever used a condenser and preferred it to an RE20 or 27 or an SM-7... They're just made for that stuff. Even on smoky jazz and the like (well, maybe not with the SM7, but for sure with the 20/27ND).

And with SO many vocalists, a good condenser can be far too "revealing" sounding - Even if they have a good voice.

i believe the signal chain for their latest album was SM58 - 1073 - LA2A. and i imagine he was in the control room for at least some of it.

I love my EV RE20 for spoken word and mic-ing the guitar amp. I also use a Shure Beta 58 which is hypercardoid or more focused which is useful when recording in the field.
