There's nothink special about a stereo channel. In a sense, there's no such thing Everything is mono when you break it down.

Well I guess I can't feel too bad about being confused since some smaller mixers have so-called "stero channels"... Ok, I'll get over it - thanks!

Now what about the pan position on record? Does it make a difference? Or does it just go straight through the tape outs to the recorder no matter how the pan is set?

If you want to create stereo from two mono channels, you need to hard pan them. When sent to the main stero bus, the left panned track will only go to the left side of the recorder and the right panned track will only go to the right.

If you are using the groups on the MX9000 as your recorder sends, then you definitely need to pan them, If you are using Direct outs, then you don't. But Ialways do anyway, just to keep good habits.

I def recommend upgrading to the Yamaha. I did a similar thing, MX8000 to 01v v1 (pre the 96 even) years back.
Huge difference. as much as people hate behringer, the 8000 was great for me then, but the headroom and versatility of the 01v in comparison.................. well, HUGE difference. and the 01v96v2 is a massive step up again.
