Positions and patterns, hmmm...I suppose it might depend on the room and the mics and my mood that day.

With overheads, I'm not sure how far away you mean by 'wide-spaced'...I tend to place the OHs 1-3 feet above the cymbals and try to get a good sound from the toms and whole kit with them. Usually it's AB, sometimes, rarely, it's XY.

Room mics are another kettle of fish and a lot depends on the sound of the room and the sound I'm after i.e. whether I'm looking to open up the sound or tighten it down. For rock drums the tone and size of the room is darn important. I often go fairly distant while remaining equi-distant from the impact point on the kick or snare...and like to try a few positions while recording to compare and decide. I don't generally place the room mics tooooo wide, maybe a 60-degree angle between them both and the kit.

Oh, yeah, patterns. Some like omni...I usually start with cardiod. Whatever sounds best that day, in that room with that drummer and song...does it for me. How 'bout you?

I ran this and other fourms crazy about a month or so ago about this very topic. I have a small room and refelections and phase were kicking my ass. Since then, thanks to all the advice, I got some better mics. And started using an XY setup about about 50" - 55" above the snare, off to the drummers right of the snare about 5". Because of the way this drummer sets his kit up the snare is not in the center but this hasn't bothered me because the image and phase is so much better. I'm still working on finding some good ambiance elsewhere in the house. The only room I havent tried is the attic!

How do you check for the various drum microphones to be in phase? Is it just through listening in mono?

Yep, mono is the only phase checker I got. But you could hear something strange in stereo, sorta phazey... I think I decided that it was the reflections I was hearing in stereo. Because of the odd shape of the room, with a wide spaced pair, one mic was about 3 feet from the wall and the other was about 1 foot from the wall.

Well, I think I'm finally starting to settle on something. (after nine jillion different combinations) :)

Bassmac, what's your overall vibe on the C1's? Have you tried 'em on anything other than OH duties? I'm gonna buy a couple if enough ppl like 'em... what are they, like twenty bucks a pop? :D

I just got a matched pair of BLUE Dragonfly mics and really dig 'em for OH's. And they're cheap! Not Chinese-mic cheap, but cheaper than a pair of U87's. Yum!

I've only had the C1's for a day now, and only tried them as OH's so far, but I can already tell they do have those Neuman like qualities everybody is talking about. I don't have any singers available at the moment, and if I sang through them - I might void their warranty. :eek:

They are big and impressive looking - nice case, shock mount, etc., no question a great value.
