I'd say the 57s, like a tom, but a little back to get more skin sound. But as always, make sure to play with it to get something pretty.

I would say the 57's too.

I would normally use small diaphrams in an XY config. but I'm not sure XY would work with 57's.

I recorded some just the other day and stuck a large diaphram mic underneath as well as the 2 mics on top. I haven't mixed it down yet so I don't know if it worked or not yet. It was probably quite unneccesary!

You could probably use it (the XY configuration) but you can also get away with just straight micing them and panning left and right or popping a stereo expander on them if you want that. I guess... Good luck,

thanks for all the suggestions... i just grabbed a pair of 57's. i'm gonna mic the drums straight and see how that sounds. i'll have an update soon...
