hey all
i'm getting ready to record congas for some acoustic tunes i'm doing. does anyone have any favorite mics/set-ups for recording congas?
i'm tracking to Logic Express on 1.6Ghz Mac G5. and i'm using an M-Audio Firewire 410 interface. mics: 1 large condenser, 1 small condenser, 2 cardiod (58 knock-offs). i can get my hands on 57s if i have to.
looking forward to hearing your fav set ups!
thanks,
Rado

I'd say the 57s, like a tom, but a little back to get more skin sound. But as always, make sure to play with it to get something pretty.

I would normally use small diaphrams in an XY config. but I'm not sure XY would work with 57's.
I recorded some just the other day and stuck a large diaphram mic underneath as well as the 2 mics on top. I haven't mixed it down yet so I don't know if it worked or not yet. It was probably quite unneccesary!

You could probably use it (the XY configuration) but you can also get away with just straight micing them and panning left and right or popping a stereo expander on them if you want that. I guess... Good luck,
Nathan
