recording problems

Hi I'm new her, so there is on thing...
No matter which Recording software I use,, Cool Edit, Nuendo Steinberg, I get the same result..
When I have recorded 1 track and will sing on another track, it records track 1 on to track to witout any singing..It doesn't matter if I am using a mixer or not... Anyone with a good answer

Yes, I did read the manual. but the only way I am getting something recorded, is when I choose mono mix or stereo mix in the windows mixer..I meen thats when it records track 1 on to track 2... nothing in the mic...

are there inputs that you can delegate?is it possible the second

are there inputs that you can delegate?is it possible the second input is being sent in as input one, and therfore not receiving a signal? are you using a breakout box or plugging straight into the soundcard? sorry if i have misinterpretted the question...
