hi I'm trying to record a set of tablas but on the left hand drum I'm having a lot of difficulty getting the thumping bass i do live when using a sm57. In my room or any smaller room the sm-57 sounds thin. I've tried my studio projects c1, MXL v69 tube mic, its better but the tube sound doesn't have the clarity i need.
Thanks

Small condensors should work well on tablas. I just got a pair of SP C4s and have been using them on frame drums, udus, clay pots and other ethnic percussion. So far I'm extremely happy with this purchase.

My son plays tablas and I've also recorded Swapan Chaudary and spoken to Zakhir Hussain, who only uses SM57's live.
I've had excellent results recently using a Shure Beta52 kick mic on the big head and an Audix D-1 on the small head. Very clean, rich, full, fat tones and you can pan the 2 tracks a bit to get a nice 3D sound image.
I've also used a big condenser on the big head as well as a stereo pair of Earthworks TC40K's for a nice stereo ambient overview, blended with the condensers.
