A lot of the versatility comes from the fact that the 'pad ' switch actually varies the amount of negative feedback around the first gain stage .....
This reflects back through the input transformer and hence affects the loading on the mic itself.
It's like having three modes of colour and bandwidth.
There are a lot of great mics out there .
I've yet to hear one that doesn't work in the system. 8)

Re20 (I just got the black anniversary edition) - great - an acoustic bass just jumped out.
Sure58 - best I've heard this mic sound.
I am having fun with this unit and have not had any bad results. If I had to guess, the blueberry would really shine. That's a great mic and the large diaphragms just seem to really benefit from this pre.

I don't know myself first hand, just wondering...
I have both solid state and tube pres (both with and without trannys), as well as solid state/transformerless and tube/tranny mics. All combinations work, and work well, albiet they have (obviously) different sounds.
Putting a tube mic with a tube pre sounds wonderful. I use either a CAD VX2 of Neumann M149 into a Pendulum MDP-1A pre. The 149 is so hot, I can optionally patch it into the Pendulum through the line in, bypassing the Jensen input tranny. Either way, it sounds simply magnificent. The CAD VX2 into the Pendulum is another wonderful sound. Actually that setup goes though 4 different tube circuits: (i) the head amp in the mic (12AX7), (ii) the line driver and output tranny for the mic (12AU7), (iii) the first stage amp in the Pendulum (12AX7), and (iv) the output stage of the Pendulum (6922).
You can certainly match a tube mic with a tube pre.

I am interested in your thoughts on the CAD. Didn't CAD send you a VSM for review? I picked up a VX2 several months back, kinda the VSM's big brother. It's a rather nice mic, IMO.

I've only had mine a couple of weeks and have only messed around with it, but it sounded great with my Universal Sound dynamic and amazing with my 797 Audio CR998 tube mic (I know, two mics you've never heard of). I especially liked it in Deep mode with the CR998 in omni and the 30dB pad in and the gain cranked to 9+...smoooth.
I asked Sebatron what mics he recommended and he mentioned the AT4047. Someone also mentioned the RE20 would match well. I do remember Kurt saying, in his review, that the Seb was the first preamp that made him like his U87 and made it sound how he imagined it should.
I get the feeling this preamp is going to sound great on a lot of mics.
