Hi,
I am looking for a decent quality drum mic package that can be used for recording practices live off the floor (for recording demos for club owners) and also for live playing in small clubs. I have invested most of my money in my kit which kicks a** (6 piece Yamaha Recording Customs).
If we record in a studio I have no intention of using any of my mics as the studios always have top of the line equipment (sorry but I'm not buying a $5000 Nueman mic!)
So.. has anyone tried these out? Info on the web is practically non-existent. I've come across a few reports that the PG81 condensers are very good and the tom mics PG56 are good. Don't know about the PG52 bass mic.
The reason I'm interested in these is that they seem to provide a lot of bang for the buck (6 XLR cables, 6 mics, 3 clips). They list at $975 MSRP although I've seen them for about $3-400 US on the web.
Does anyone know how the P56 compares to an SM57 on the snare? OR the PG52 to an AKG D112 or Audix D6?
Another low budget alternative I've come across is Superlux DRK-A3C2 drum mic package.. but again I have nothing to compare them with.
I am basically after a 6 piece mic set (1 bass, 1 snare, 2 tom mics (split over 4 toms), and 2 OH condensers). I will be running them through a small 6 channel XLR sub-mixer that has global 48v phantom power for the OHs and plugging the sub-mixer output (1/4"balanced TSRs) into an 2 available channels on our Mackie main mixer board.
I am trying to keep the cost down to about $350 US for mics/cables/clips as its only for live and demo uses. What do you think - am I nuts or does this sound like a reasonable plan?
Thanks for any tips,
(this stuff is making my head hurt!)

I Would recommend you the CAD's.
A Drummer who performed at the Montreal Drum Fest last year was using them and he told me to go for them.
the prices go from 150 to 300$ better than the PG series.
But anyways, it depends your mic techniques, i record with 3-4 mics.
MD421 on Kick.
SM57 on snare
and 2 condensers on overhead.
Good Luck.

Thanks for the info. I know I should get SM57/AKG D112/ and Rhode NT's OH but I burned a huge hole in my wallet and need something to last until I put the fire out.
anything like the Shure sm57 4 package and I'm looking at $500 plus stands and XLR cables.. egad it never ends!
It looks like its a toss up between Shure 6 pack $300/ Audix Fusion 6 pack $300/ Samson 7 pack $250.. or maybe the Superlux (a cheap knock off of the Audix ). If you had to choose what is best of these choices?
Thanks a lot!

I don't think the pg mics can compare at all to shures good mics
I don't think the pg mics can compare at all to shures good mics like the sm57. There's a prepack of I believe 3 sm57s and a shure beta 52 kick mic which will blow away the pg52 p.o.s. This pack runs a bit more but comes with tom clips as well and the best thing is the fact you can use the 57's on pretty much anything else.
