How much different, technicly speaking, is the SM57 from the SM58 when Micing guitar cabinets? Is there a big frequency difference?

57 is pretty much standard on cabs, I reckon the 58 can't get the same sensitivity of response 'cos of the shield...lacks a bit of presence. I've never liked using 58's for anything other than yelling into during live performance or rehearsal. Personally I'd stick with the 57 on cabs.

For another mike in the price range, try the Kel HM-1 on guitar. The results I've heard are impressive from a 100 dollar mic.
