welcome to recording! :) i've never used the fostex, so maybe someone else could comment on that.

i do have a few questions for you two that might help you think more about what how you want to record and work on the mix...

-how many instruments would you need to record at the same time?

-what sort of computer do you have? what are the specs?

-do you have any mics or di boxes?

-have you thought about buying pro tools from digidesign?

we can help you out a lot more once we know how you two are used to working together and how confident you are on computers.

In my opinion software recording is the cheapest way to go and best for begginers. Some musicians prefere using software instead of buying equipment because it's cheaper and easier to use, however for productions you need some type of equipment.
